Older Citizens

Been a while since I updated this blog. I have a new project: Bringing blogging to older citizens.

There are approximately over 150 million blogs on the Internet with 1.3 million blog posts per day. Btw if you don’t have a computer you can use the library.  Clearly people have got something to say. I started this blog for older citizens because there is a treasure trove of experience that should be tapped……

The blog with full tutorials is at http://OlderCitizens.wordpress.com If you are an older citizen and have a blog let me know I am putting up a directory on http://OlderCitizens.com Have a look and let me know what you think. Its all non profit and blogs are free let me show you how,  Older Citizen or not. All it takes is 30 minutes of your time.

Older Citizens should have a voice they have so much to offer. AND so do you!

Thanks, spread the word….at least leave a comment thanks.

Sigh

Crashed three times in the middle of recording a video, sigh. Updated my eCollege dot me site . Crashed another couple of times. Sigh. Then I looked at the clock and it was two minutes to six, I had forgotten to pick up my meds ( don’t worry I have a stash). Sigh. A nice cup of coffee will help but shit remembered I had bought the cheap stuff to save money which I don’t like, stupid! Sigh. Then sent my daughter out to get cream for the christmas pudding that was on sale. The cream cracked in her rucksack and went everywhere. Sigh. So to cheer myself up I updated my eCollege site.Do have a look. I’ve included the post here for my subscribers to this blog.

Been having a troublesome day so……..

I thought I would cheer myself up with some Art. I am more ignorant of Art than I care to mention but I know what I like. Perhaps the most famous paintings I have seen were in the Uffizi gallery in Florence my favourite city in Europe. Of note there is Botticelli’s Venus on a Half Shell:

Botticelli's Birth of Venus reworked on the website annautopiagiordano.it Florence is so beautiful, the square with the statue of David ie wonderful. To sit in the square in an outdoor café, a little stoned, sipping Campari Sodas. Yes sipping because the point is to be with the ambiance without breaking the bank. to be smartly dressed is a must otherwise you will be given a table inside. You have to look cool. You should look like one of The Beautiful People, aging perhaps but aging gracefully. The fact we were camping on the side of hill 5 miles outside town need not be mentioned. The thing is wherever you go you have to blend in. Myself with my 25 year old slim, leggy Japanese wife (well she won’t read this but one of the reasons I married her not because her dad was a millionaire, nor that she had an IQ off the scale but because John Lennon had a Japanese wife; the coolest man ever. ) blended.

Oh dear aren’t I awful. Ooops. Back to Art. You do realise that all Art is generally available on the ‘net? So there is no excuse. Of course, if you must and the fact you are technophiles, you can make it a technology. So I love Kandinsky and below is a slider of his work.

[hislider id=”1″]

Unfortunately HiSlider only works on a self hosted WordPress site. So here is a promo video of the site. I have just learned to use annotations. What do you think?

I love the colours and the integrity. Above should be for reference only – i just love moving pictures.

Nota Bene

I know how to be buy a computer. Probably I got used to people ignoring the box that did all the work but calling the monitor the computer, anyway I bought my first proper computer in 1994. It cost a fortune because i spent half the total price on a 17 inch monitor. You see you spend all your time in front of your monitor, the fastest and biggest computer need not be viewed through a 15 inch monitor. I have a 22 inch wide screen monitor and I run at resolution of 1920 x 1080. Makes sense to me. I live in front of my computer as my environment is not conducive to perambulations. You might find my graphics a tad large but to me they are normal. For example my signature is 36pt.

philipBut to me its ok. A signature should be a tad flamboyant. I have said in Essential Free Graphics how important it is to have a good graphics program without spending months or years on Adobe Photoshop. All my stuff comes from Expression Design from Microsoft. The studio was selling a good few hundred euro but I don’t know why they stopped selling it but now its free. It does the job.

I created :

pennypedestalsign

I did it all except for photoshopping the background of Penny the cat. you can get the rest of the story Not Another Kitten dot com. ” Tails from The Kitten Shop” a damn good read.

Thanks

See? (I can do small!!!!)

Thats the end of a very trying day!! Thanks for your time!

Statistics

My friend Seren (her blog is here) She has 35k readers,  She blogs about Second Life. I have a few thousand across all my blogs.  She celebrated her three years of blogging and I realised that I had been blogging for four years. There are some 71 million WordPress blogs . You can look at the stats here  All my links open a new page. Over 384 million people view more than 13.3 billion pages each month. This is just WordPress. Tumblr have 101 million with 44 billion blog posts.  The blogosphere is vast and very healthy. There are 62 million comments made each month on WordPress so this is by no means a passive medium. I am amazed at this. Never in the history of humankind has there been such vociferousness.

People blog about everything and anything. It is an easy communications medium; some specialise and some, like this blog, are general. All my main blogs are self hosted and the most popular set up earlier this year is eCollege.me people want to learn, especially online.  The statistics below refer to the USA which only represents a proportion of blogging. Other stats show a much higher proportion of women blogging.

State-of-Blogging-in-2012

Below is a report on Social Media 2012. Clicking on the link will take you to my scribd site, perhaps my most successful contribution to the vast library that is the Internet with over 80k reads. As you can see the link below is not an embed but just a link. This is a serious drawback of a free site rather than a self hosted WordPress site.

The Social Media Report 2012 by Philip Finlay-Bryan

Another site you should be aware of is Hyperconnectivity dot me I love doing research. 🙂 This site has a number of important points and well worth a glance with emphasis on the UK.

The message? You are here reading this blog. If you haven’t got one, get one its free. After you have wet your feet with a free site take the plunge and get a self hosted site it is far more sophisticated while being as easy to use. I will hold your hand if you need it through Personal Domains dot net. You can fill out the form below too.

Powerpoint

Below is a PowerPoint presentation, a promo for Personal Domains. It seems WordPress doesn’t embed the presentation but opens PowerPoint.

21st Century Networks

I was going to do a narration but decided to put the whole thing to one of my music favourite tracks then it turned into a music video and promo for Ravens Kiss dot org too. I can make serious PowerPoint presentations and I have my cert from Microsoft. I uploaded the presentation and a video of the presentation to skydrive for sharing. Below is the upload with music on YouTube.

I have noticed that ads sometimes appear on this site. Its because I haven’t paid for an upgrade I have two things to say about this:

1. A self hosted WordPress site is a hundred times better than a free one, Personal Domains dot net is a self hosted WordPress site

2. WordPress will offer a premium domain dot com etc and host it. However you will still not get plug ins an essential feature of any WordPress site.

I can register and install WordPress on any of domains registered by me. From start to ready to use takes about 10 minutes. The way I run many of my domains is to have a minimal site then have the blog as a sub domain so there is FamilyBlogs.info and blog.FamilyBlogs.info which is my WordPress blog.

Graphic Designers and professional web designers are princesses and princes and are paid accordingly. Always wanted to be one but between you and me and this blog (just between us ok?) I’m not good enough. Sure I know html (hypertext markup language) even a bit of html 5 . I can recognise segments of code and nick them if they are not copyrighted. But friends why bother? There are a million free WordPress themes. AND web site templates. All free. AND if you find a really really good one buy it. I did for 2ndLife.biz. Its gorgeous and omg costs me 8 euros a month! Shock! Horror! 2 euros a week that’s, hang on, oh shit about 21 cents a day. Damn and me living on disability. The cat will have to go, she costs me 80 cents a day. Could have 4 web sites ….I’M JOKING>

I just do not understand why people are not internet freaks like me.

In this one-hour documentary produced by the BBC in 1990, Douglas falls asleep in front of a television and dreams about future time when he may be allowed to play a more active role in the information he chooses to digest. A software agent, Tom (played by Tom Baker), guides Douglas around a multimedia information landscape, examining (then) cuttting-edge research by the SF Multimedia Lab and NASA Ames research center, and encountering hypermedia visionaries such as Vannevar Bush and Ted Nelson. Looking back now, it’s interesting to see how much he got right and how much he didn’t: these days, no one’s heard of the SF Multimedia Lab, and his super-high-tech portrayal of VR in 2005 could be outdone by a modern PC with a 3D card. However, these are just minor niggles when you consider how much more popular the technologies in question have become than anyone could have predicted – for while Douglas was creating Hyperland, a student at CERN in Switzerland was working on a little hypertext project he called the World Wide Web…

LANGUAGE: English
PUBLISHER: BBC

The point is Douglas was tired of the passivity of watching television; Here is the opening of the movie:

He thought there would be an Avatar to assist him through the internet, cyberspace. We do not have such a thing unless Google bots can be called that. The multi media lab no longer exist and the only micons we have are the ones I created and yes I own micons.org and made hundreds of them . Here’s one i like :

tigerzoomSo we are interactive. um…er… is web surfing different from channel surfing? Of course we have 600 million vids on youtube but is that different from just having 600 tv channels? We have a global community like Facebook AND ANYTIME ANYWHERE I can poke a friend. Second Life has Avatars now we are getting somewhere, well to 30 to 50k people. We have blogs.

How many posts are published on WordPress.com?

WordPress.com users produce about 29.2 million new posts

I spent a good while sussing out my comments plug in. Because :

How many people read blogs on WordPress.com?

Over 395 million people view more than 3.7 billion pages each month.

40.5 million new comments each month.

So here we have great interactivity. Youtube has comments.

What gets to me I guess is that people do not seem to be a part of it all. If I lived in a city I would want a cool address. I would also want a cool mail address (jeez I’ve been saying this sine 1998, still they don’t listen). I have philipjamesbryan@live.com (hate country names) . its my name. I have Philip and Dude @irishsecure.com for twitter i have pj@micons.org . info@2ndlife.biz and now admin@imacoolchick.com for staff i am hiring. If I need an email address i just create one. Takes 30 seconds and they all have web mail. No no no I don’t check each one I have them all forwarded to philip@irishsecure.com which I keep open all the time.

So kids there you have it., I can do no more than offer my services. Domains cost 15 bucks hosting 9 bucks a month getting me as Tech Support and will throw in a web site and blog. AND training if you need it. C’mon guys the internet is here to stay, start living it. Go to Services page

Davy and V love caves and wonder if there are more here. So they swam back to the small island, and set off to the mainland by the beach. Davy being the daydreamer he is starts getting wild idea’s about moving here. He first envisions a huge dock. V knowing Davy so well looked at his eye’s and notices something is up. She ask.. What are you thinking about now? Davy replied I envision a boat dock here.. V just rolls her eyes..

Touch Me

]Head for that cave for the mh magical ball teleport.

The cave is well hidden. Its best to run to the bottom of the ocean towards the mountain. You will find another “non” clickable mh magical ball. head that way, and up the ramp leading to the cave. Once at the docks the teleport takes you back to the spawn point. Your next clue is on 2 fingers island. 2 fingers island is very easy to notice. This island has 2 rock formations on both sides. *HINT* the island is behind the shops, and to the left. Run towards the mh huts, and look left from the beach area.

To you who see
The world with me
I give this post .

If you in courtesy should look
With favour on its pages claim
The title deed and write your name
Here on this page. To you who know
The glamour of the passing show,
Sublime and sordid, trivial, great,
But life, this post I dedicate.
As casual lookers-on we meet
Here at some corner of the street.
It’s good to know you see it too,
Smile, sigh and wonder when I do;
That you discern the crooked jest
Of contrast ‘twixt our worst and best,
Humour is ever friendship’s test.
I like to know you hear the catt
Of all things sad, neglected, small;
Thritt to the magic of the wind,
Love country, town and your own kind,
Sinners and saints and sea and sky
Just as they are, for so do I.

Then let this post
I fain would mend
Be yours, my friend.

Flat Fact: Plagiarism, believe it or not, comes from a Latin verb that means, “to kidnap.” If you plagiarize you’re kidnapping and stealing others’ hard work and intellectual property. It is academic and public dishonesty.

The following is a diary of events that occured at the Trinity Web Summit held on Febuary 4th 2010.

A Tree in Trinity

My overall experience was extremely positive. I was enervated and uplifted and this was a feeling shared by all that participated. Personally I sometimes feel isolated living as I do in the countryside. Knowing that there are others that are “keeping the faith” re-affirmed my attitude to the internet, its use and its propagation as a global communications medium. Distance is no longer relevant. We are experiencing a social and cultural revolution at a level not experienced in, and I will be bold, in the evolution of our presence on this planet. A global community is emerging. I embrace it and I believe that the four hundred or so attendees at the event share this view. ALL the speakers do.

Those that were there will understand this sentence:

I have and know the code I will try and make it beautiful

To Quote Wikipedia on Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

“An Inquiry into Values is the first of Robert M. Pirsig’s texts in which he explores his Metaphysics of Quality. The 1974 book describes, in first person, a 17-day motorcycle journey across the United States by the author (though he is not identified in the book) and his son Chris, joined for the first nine days by close friends John and Sylvia Sutherland. The trip is punctuated by numerous philosophical discussions, referred to as Chautauquas by the author, on topics including epistemology, ethical emotivism and the philosophy of science.

The book sold over 4 million copies in twenty-seven languages and was described by the press as “the most widely read philosophy book, ever.” It was originally rejected by 121 publishers, more than any other bestselling book, according to the Guinness Book of Records.”

I enjoy writing. I am sure there will be a more erudite and scholarly analysis of the Trinity Event available. This is my experience as it unfolded punctuated by the “odd” Chautauquas.

I made a very grandiose statement at the beginning of 2010.

I said 2010 is mine.

Flat Fact: A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet. The top-level domain names are installed in the root zone of the name space. For all domains in lower levels, it is the last part of the domain name, that is, the label that follows the last dot of a fully qualified domain name. For example, in the domain name http://www.example.com, the top-level domain is com, or COM, as domain names are not case-sensitive. Management of most top-level domains is delegated to responsible organizations by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which operates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and is in charge of maintaining the DNS root zone.

Jesus Ireland. ICANN are changing the net this year. We can have fadas. I got the forms off ICANN last year to register a Gaelic character set. Told DIT they didn’t care. I have the ear of my local TD but…welll…Tullamore…Offaly …ummm Trinity YOU COULD DO IT. I’m a Brit, not my native tongue though on my Irish Secure (dot) com I’ve been running a Bother with Fada campaign for six months. I’ll register FÁS.com from a French site if you don’t.

and: The initial set of top-level domains, defined by RFC 920 in October 1984, was a set of “general purpose domains”: com, edu, gov, mil, org. The net domain was added with the first implementation of these domains. The com, net, and org TLDs, despite their originally specific goals, are now open for use for any purpose.

I am a bit of a purist. I lke to keep (dot) com as the general generic top level domain, I can sell anything on these domains; (dot) net I like to keep for technical stuff and NETworking, I will sell technical products on these sites; (dot) org e.g. Only Avatars (dot) org, I like to provide free information, giveaways and personal observations. I am a purist but I won’t say no to a fast buck. I run 37 gTLDs.

Flat Fact: The Zombies 1959-1968

The group formed in 1959 in St Albans, England, and gained their initial reputation playing the Old Verulamians Rugby Club in that city. The group was formed while the members were at school. Some sources state that Argent, Atkinson and Grundy were at St Albans School, while Blunstone and White were students at St Albans Boys’ Grammar School (since renamed Verulam School). James’ father was the original drummer.

After winning a beat-group competition sponsored by the London Evening News, the Zombies signed to Decca and recorded their first hit, “She’s Not There” (Argent’s second song, written specifically for this session), which was released in mid-1964 and peaked at number 12 in the UK, where it was their only UK Top 40 hit. This minor-key, jazz-tinged number, distinguished by its musicianship and Blunstone’s breathy vocal, was unlike anything heard in British rock at the time. It was first aired in the United States in early August 1964 on New York City rock station WINS by Stan Z. Burns, who debuted the song on his daily noontime “Hot Spot”. The tune began to catch on in early fall and eventually climbed to #2.

I was at Willesden County Grammar School WCGS, We had Prefects and we had Fags. Our Teachers wore gowns. My English Teacher, God Bless Her, was an Oxford graduate. She once fell down the stairs and broke her ankle (she was not averse to the odd tipple). I used to push her around in her wheel chair…really fast. She taught me Shakespeare, I always played Puck and she said I was the best Lear…..In Willesden, lol.

Shakespear said: For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil

Because of my English Teacher I came up with this: For in that dearth of dreams what sleep my come, when we have coiled round this mortal shuffle

I loved “Shes Not There”, wow the piano riff in the middle, so cool. I was 15.

There is a strong possibility that you will be allocated a seat in an overflow auditorium.

Oh, wow, 😦 thats a shame, o, ok. Wait A minute:

Wait ten minutes for the email to arrive:

“Oh sure Phil, no problem. I got your email.”

“Do you want me to pay ? Will I get an email confirm as a ticket?”

” No, I’ll put a star next to your name, put you on the guest list, thats fine, pay at the door”

Hehehehe.

cool.

Got up at 3am on the 4th. I usually do. I have friends in the states, I am a developer for Blue Mars based in SF and I always want to speak to Tiff and Glenn in Hawaii. It was so funny when I slapped Glenn around the face in an Avatar/ Turing Test. Can’t tell you it here ’cause a robot/avatar will find out and it would ruin the test. It works though. If you need to tell if an Avatar is real or a robot drop me a line and I’ll fill you in. I’ll know if your a Robot. I got this test see. I recorded the meeting we had in Slade City one of my best. Must have been all the top Blue Mars designers there. Its 58 minutes long…but its good. You can find it on Technology Is Me (dot) Blip (dot) TV.

I have been neglecting them a bit, sorry guys, here is our video

I am also doing a Time Management – Cost/Benefit Analysis course. I usually have to monitor it every six hours or so. I needed my Lap Top. Well I don’t like going anywhere without a computer these days. I run Opera with file sharing enabled on my Lap Top and on my PC. Funny, My PC is hi-spec, I designed it myself, running Windows 7 Ultimate Quad Core 4 gigs RAM HD Graphics card. My Laptop is a Dunne Sores Bargain Sale with 750 megs of Ram. My Laptop can access my PC from anywhere in the world via The Internet. It runs Ubuntu (Linux). Guess which computer is faster accessing The Internet? See the PC page for an explanation. I’d be in Bens place by 2pm I’m sure he’d log me in without telling me his password. I wouldn’t ask. So I set up projects running that wouldn’t need attention for six hours.

Packed my LapTop : USB Memory “Stick” well, its the size of two paper backs and needs its own power supply. Its 500 gigs and cost 79 euros; usb mouse and web cam; Cat 5 cable; double plug adapter so I only need one socket; Dunne Stores web cam; usb mouse; usb 4 way extension. I was set.

My little pink 7 year old iPod ontaining 527 of my faourite tunes and head phones (not plugins, hate those, but slim black with mic and volume control, proper ones. Cost me 12 euros in the local techie store.) Love my iPod.

Camera was charged with spare batteries and 4 gig memory card. iPod with 500 of my fvourite tunes. (Its 8 years old, battery life is not so good now, will last a couple of days but I brought the combo usb/3 pin plug Thank You Apple for a sensible lead!

I was set. Had my offaly cool hemp go-green carrier bag with a tracksuit, book and a few leaflets of stuff.

I was off To Dublin. During the event it was asked why come to Ireland? Ah well, darlin, its a rocky road even for The High Kings.

he will visit inside im dancing (dot) com. Loved the movie. i like trains. Went across The Nubian Desert on one, mostly on the roof. Then when I was in India, travelling 3rd Class, a lump of Opium made it all quite tolerable. I was very young then. Jesus. Drugs are so dangerous. I must have been mad. Know the drug that causes the most problems? Alcohol. Know the drug thats most difficult to come off and has the worst withdrawls? Valium. My first degree is a science degree. I know brain chemistry. I love trains though. I picked up my book and realised that trains were so much safer than Iron Bicycles. the transfer of atoms, well….

“‘The gross and net result of it is that people who spent most of their natural lives riding iron bicycles over the rocky roads of this parish [and to Dublin no doubt] get their personalities mixed up with the personalities of their bicycle as a result of the interchanging of the atoms of each of them and you would be surprised at the number of people in these parts who are nearly half people and half bicycles…when a man lets things go so far that he is more than half a bicycle, you will not see him so much because he spends a lot of his time leaning with one elbow on walls or standing propped by one foot at kerbstones.'”

I’m at that bit. LOL x A Million.

When asked If he new where Hell was, he replied “Tullamore”. He was apparently transferred there/here. So I was told. Me and Mick Scully are going to put a plaque up outside his house. Mr J.Joyce was an admirer , The Internet says….

Real Time Update: You know I told you that I was on a Time-Management/Cost-Benefit programme? Well I didn’t really get it together while I was away. Shit! Lost the momentum, it would take me a week to get up to speed. You can’t let these things slide for 36 hours! Checked the project board, no one had taken up the slack! Shit! NETWORKING? Its a joke. Struggled for a few hours, no My pseudo NASDAQ slipt from a 102 average to 6. The project was screwed. Lost maybe a weeks gains and maybe never recover. Checked the main board again and picked up a few left overs. Checked the main board after 4 hours. Still nothing. No, don’t believe it. Checked BEHIND the main board. I had 45 ready to go high end projects with upwards of 30,000 items. My project would cruise for 3 Days! Without me doing a thing except a 5 second install per product. 75% were top of the range products yeilding maximum returns. Networking? Yep NETWORKING!!! Running at 104-105 points now

3.30pm in Trinity. Went to Nassau Street Entrance. Hmmm, no signs, askedsecurity, no info, never heard of it. Went to Elliot Lecture Hall. Nothing. Found a coin operated Internet machine. Checked dws2, yep Nassau St/Elliot starts at 5pm. OK. Did a bit of viral InsideImDancing.com fly posting. 4pm nothing. Went to Elliot, left a postit with http://3d.OnlyAvatars.org next to the computer. Had a quick coffee. Nothing. Decided to phone Paddy. Went to Internet machine. Put in 1 euro. Found his number. Went to telephone. Won’t accept 2 euro coin. Asked a girl if she had a 1 euro coin for my copper change. “Yes, sure” She couldn’t find her purse. She opened her rucksack. Took everything out. No purse. Looked in a side pocket. “Ah here it is” no 1 euro coin. Her friend said “What did you want….?” She looked for HER purse. Found it, gave it to me. Back to the phone. Dialled. Nothing. Inserted 1 euro coin. It Took it. Dialled. Nothing. Pressed refund. Nothing. I had a 50 euro note left. Went and bought a drink for 85cents. Got change. Went to the phone. Nah.No. It was 4.25pm. Went to elliot Theatre. went inside. Lecture on The Declaration of Human Rights. A person I know is thinking of taking Ireland to Strasbourg for a Human Rights abuse. Listened made a summary of my friends case. Lecture finished 4.55pm. Went and spoke to lecturer. She insisted as she wasn’t a lawyer wouldn’t look at it. Pressed my case. She accepted my card and said she was meeting with a top barrister(?) next week and would tell him to expect a call from me.

5.15pm Went to Security said there was nothing in Elliot. he said “No, thats the overflow, you want the Burke Theatre downstairs to register” Big Crowd. Big Queue. From my previous wanderings I knew the back stairs, put me near the front of the queue. EVERYONE seemed to be waving printed tickets. Reached the desk. “ticket please” “Paddy said it was OK, Philip Finlay-Bryan” .I had 48 euro for a discounted 50 euro ticket……consults list. “Thats fine Philip ” gave me a Blue Heart. Phew. Put on my Microsft Tech Net badge with my name and Irish Secure Internet Services on it. No one else had a name badge. Lol. Found a computer, there were lots. Went to the main area thronged with people. Computer. Hangon. Someone forgot to log out. Typed in http://3d.onlyavatars.org my blog came up on screen AVATAR, The Blog. Walked away. Cool.

5.45 pm (approx). Went in, got a seat in the second row. Got The Goodie Bag. Watched. Operating system Windows 7? All Trinity computers run XP. on . Ok PDFs , Microsoft Office, standard directory structure. Took a pic of it.

Burke Theatre Operating System

We will see, IN THE Flesh Craig of CraigsList and Mr WordPress Matt Mullenweg. You take a picture of an operating system. OMG YOU GEEK!!!

Lol x loads

“Hi Everybody. Sorry. If you went to Elliot for the overflow, well we couldn’t use it so everyone from Elliot is here. If you want your money back just let me know. You can still stay but we will refund your 100 euros” No I couldn’t…could I?…No, I couldn’t….hahahahahahaha.

AFTERMATH

-*Big Grin*-

Went for a beer in the Atrium. Networked. Wore my 3d Avatar Glasses at times for Fun. Couldn’t decide on an ID badge. I was wearing three different coloured hearts, so I put my Castle Palooza Volunteer Photo ID around my neck. When people asked if I was a Trinity Volunteer I said no but I wanted people to come to Charleville Castle Festiva, thought to be THE pop festival in Ireland. I did a live blog from there last year. Dudley lent me the castle for the weekend for my 50th birthday. It was wild. It was wonderful. Nice to say :

Hey Phil what was your best birthday ever, I bet it was your 25th walking across the Sudnese Kenyan border meeting the Turkana…?”Nah, It was my 50th. Friend lent me a castle”

hahahahahaha.

Made it back to Bens, thanks security for the phone call, thanks Fergus for leading the way, thanks unknown student who recognised my ID and said he’d been to Castle Palooza twice and thought it was the best festival in Ireland.

I slept.

Got up at 7am, got dressed put on my

T Shirt. Bit tight……..Packed up. Double checked. No iPod. Unpacked…no its gone. Ahhh 😦 . Oh well there are always casualities…ahh My iPod, pinky, an old friend. Bought it in 2003. Got me through loads of boring times, uplifted me on the road. It was a friend..It (she?) always had an appropriate song, always. 😦 Patrick, the 10 year old slovakian boy who I look after (with his mum, she looks after me in exchange for lodging, they were broke and on the street) will be sad 😦 and me 😦

Headed out into the morning air. Took a picture of the half moon over the square. The sun wasn’t up but the sky was blue promising a sunny day. Walked to O’Connel Bridge and was handed a free newspaper. Glanced through it. Wow it was 70% Internet content. the METRO Herald and Everybody in Dublin was reading it! Cool. Went and sat under the statue facing the bridge. Put the METRO Herald down first as the seat was wet. Rolled a fag and started constructing this blog. Strolled up to the Luis picked up a METRO Herald..The guy handing them out said “Love your hoodie, mate”

METRO Herald Reports

A webcam viewer in Cyprus alerted wildlife park workers in Scotland to the impending birth of one of their white rhinoceros….Blair Drummond received a phone call from the woman who was watching the rhino enclosure online when she saw Dorothys water had broken.

Mother and baby are doing well.

Got to Heuston. Went to customer service. “You didn’t find a green Hemp bag…? Oh There it is – “Philip Finlay-Bryan InsideImDancing (dot) com” Thats me! Great. Made a point of thanking three Customer Service dudes for doing a good job. I am a bit of a leper where stuff like that is concerned.

Went outside. The sun was up so I put on my regular sunglasses. Had a smoke, thought…hmmm. Went up to a METRO Herald person. “Can I have a bunch for my home town I’ll give em away…?” “Sure, where you going.? “Tullamore”…Went and sat down inside. Stood up and took a few pics, I asked this guy if he would take a few snaps of me.. He said sure he was a bit of a photographer. He took this:

The Second Time I Opened My Jacket

this is him:

John Baker Killminhan Village Dublin 8

thanks John I’ll send the pics on. He has a few problems but is getting some help from a psychologist in Trinity. He said I could use his name. He needs a computer if anyone has a spare one.

Got the train…….Sat down opposite this chap. He had a thick book called the secret history of the world. I asked if i could have look.. He had loads of academic/research papers. I said “You must be a student….” No I’m a professor.

We cahatted and chatted and chatted…wow…..what a man. Knows so much about so much! Said he should have a blog. He said he was thinking about it….Got his email address: We CHATTED later that day I sent him an email. We have a new domain and a new blogger:

  • Aidan Breen (dot) com Medieval Scholar and Latin Professor at NUI Galway, Ph.D. Trinity, Blog Student > Blog (dot) AidanBreen (dot) com

got a cab home. Spoke to the driver, he asked about Skype. Gave him the info…Told him to visit Inside Im Dancing dot com. He said “I’ll write it down…Oh no need its so easy to remember”

My housekeeper was out. She had the keys. I went to see apartner of mine. Gave him a few copies of METRO Herald for the cybercafe. Spoke about running a blogging course in the cybercafe…Sure, no problem.

Went outside for a smoke. O new shop..Nauty Butt Nice cool name. Went and had a look wow lingerie sexy stuff. Chatted to the young lady… “Hey cool name, got a website?… “Yep NautyButtNice (dot) com” Oh a like-Minded Individual. Later looked at the site Nauty Butt Nice….hmm bit basic. Brings out the Entrepreneur in me. Over coffee I made http://nbn.2010mm.com…with a 3d Gallery. Went back to the shop: You can have the zip folder of the gallery for 30 euros. She said I’ll pass it on. Took me 20 minutes. Sex sells. I worry about that. Listen to this. Remember The Strawbs, Part of the Union. They made this. Its 10 minutes long but its really good. And I want to make a point, a really important point.

Sorry you have to go to 3d.OnlyAvatars.org for this bit

All I know is this: the ravens kiss my mouth,
the veins are tangled here,
the sea is made of blood.

All I know is this: the hands reaching out,
my eyes are closed,
my ears are closed,
the sky rejects my scream.

All I know is this: my nostrils drip with dreams
the hounds lap us up,
the fools laugh out,
the clock ticks out the dead.

All I know is this: my feet are sorrow here,
my words are less than lilies,
my words are clotted now:
the ravens kiss my mouth.

The O2, Niel Young and Father’s Day

I am awed, once more.

It was my birthday on March 26th and it was one of the big ones. A decade milestone. My daughter Sekani bought me a ticket to see Niel Young at The Point sometime in June. I thought how cool she is and thought no more about it really.

Time passed and I was very pleased with myself. The websites were looking really good and I had mastered Flash and video. I had become a web hosting company.

I got a text message from Majella, my ex, saying Niel Young was on Sunday. Oh. Well I didn’t think I’d go, make up some excuse. I had seen Niel Young in 2001 ~ it was Ok but I couldn’t see much, it was a hassle getting to Dublin and even more of a hassle getting home afterwards. I would make some excuse.

Sekani came round the next day. “You going to see Niel Young on Sunday, Dad?” “Sure darling”, I shouldn’t be so lazy!!! I guess I could do it…….

Sunday came. It was 10.30 am. Mick, who was staying with me, asked if I was going to the concert. Shit! Yes. Went on to Kearns Buses website, there was a bus but I phoned them to make sure.It was at 2.30pm. It was 11.30am now. So I had a shower and got changed. Found a nice sweater made by….. The Point! Seemed like an omen. Went to the shop and got a salad. Had €70 so Ok.

Dermot came round to pick up his laptop that I had upgraded. Mick and Dermot talked about the Kilkenny v. Galway hurling match played in Tullamore, yesterday. The both said I would be too hot on a sweaty bus (no a/c on Irish buses) and I should dress down. Nah. Dermot left, it was 1.30pm. Mick told me to play some Niel Young but I couldn’t really find anything, they were all a bit played out. But I put on “Hey, hey, my,my” rock and roll will never die.

2.10 ~ left home, went to the bank and got out an extra €40. Waited for the bus. Hey! saw a poster in a shop window. It was Father’s Day! Cool. The bus came and I paid my €13 return. Found a seat. Directed the a/c stream to my face. Reclined the seat and fell asleep.

4.15 ~ we were in Dublin. Turned off the a/c as I was a bit chilly. Pulled up at O’Connell Bridge and before getting off double checked with the driver about the 10.25pm bus back from ???? Brewer St. Girl gave me their pamphlet. The bus driver said “You don’t know where that is, do you?” I told him I would get a cab.

Had a fag and soaked up the vibe, watching the traffic and the people. It was sunny and warm and summer. Feeling good, looking good. Needed a pee so turned round and there was a pub, a big one. Re-leaved my self and ordered a pint of Guinness. Watched the screen behind the bar and spotted a widget I could use. The pint came and I went and sat down near a big screen and watched some highlights of the Kilkenny match.

Fancied a smoke so found the smoking area. Usually I am a bit shy, but that was the old me! I was confident, self assured, OK kind of a guy now. Cool I was! I sat down next to a lady and commented how the view of an alley was a bit depressing. We chatted. She was from Coventry, on holiday and off to visit some relatives in Westmeath tomorrow. She finished her cigarette, wished me a nice day.

I had a sip of beer, rolled another fag.

“is this chair free?” He was about thirty with a foreign accent. He was a kiwi and I commented how I had just watched Lord of the Rings and how beautiful New Zealand was. He said Ireland was beautiful and rainy just like NZ. He was single and a welder, working on a gas pipeline. We chatted, potted life stories. One of his basic philosophy’s in life: Help the youngsters starting out, 3 out of 5 make it. “Well we are all in this life together…..”

I finished my pint and walked out into the sunshine. Looking around, smiling, enjoying the afternoon. Went and sat on a memorial watching the comings and goings of O’Connell bridge. Got a family guy to take a photo. (Beware Des Bishop’s knackers and Dubs). Took a few pics, the street, the Liffey, humming the Foggy Dew. Went for a stroll, took more pics ~ The Post Office with it’s bullet holes. I found myself next to a statue of James Joyce and got a streetcleaner to take a pic. I sent it to Mick.

6.10pm ~ found a taxi. “The Point please” Chatted about the economy 425,000 unemployed. Depressing. So he asked me who I was going to see? He said great! And did I know his birthday was the same as Niel Young’s?

6.25pm doors open in ten minutes. So, no longer the Point eh? It was The O2. It was June 21st 2009, Father’s day. With Neil Young. We were let in and I looked around. Got myself a pint. Hmmm.. could see the stage a bit and the underside of stairs. Hmmm. Checked out there was a smoking area. Finished my pint and walked up the stairs to the arena seats. WOW! WOW! WOW!

Welcome to the 21st Century.

Calmed down a little bit and went for a fag. Guy came over and sat down next to me and in a thick Belfast accent said “take a swig o this” passing me a half bottle of whiskey. I took a good swig and let out a yell! We introduced our selves, “Colin” and a fan. Ha, we were at the 2001 concert together. “Fancy a smoke?” Colin asked. I declined. Then after a few minutes, wtf, gimme some. So comfortably high now. “Keep on rockin in the free world Colin”

8.15pm ~ I had found my seat. Block L 55 155. Right at the back, right in the middle. Perfect. Centre : The Stage, lhs : big video screen for close ups, rhs: the same.

8.35pm, the lights go out, 12,000 people start cheering. Single spotlight on the mike, close up video screens flicker on, there he is : Niel Young 1945 ~ Now. Looking a bit old perhaps but… He says “Hi…Welcome…Thanks for coming” We all roar back. The middle aged civil servant next to me cheers. Niel starts to sing….hey hey….my, my…rock and roll will never die. I wipe away the emotion flowing down my cheeks. I sing along.(Oh The Sound Quality ~ Dolby Best!) He finishes and the crowd erupts. He plays Cinnamon Girl. Full on Rock guitar. I rock, I play air guitar, I know the riffs. He climaxes five times with the drummer. The crowd goes wild.

He goes to the mike and says he is having a good time. He turns on the front spot lights and illuminates US! All of us, full house us. 12,000 of us. We scream Yeah! House lights off. he puts on his harmonica and walks over to the piano. He plays……he sings….he plays the harmonica as only he can. He has totally got us. In fact there is no ‘us’ it’s ‘We’. He plays some more songs, he plays the organ, the electric slide hawaiian guitar is featured. He stops and goes to the mike…

“I’ve got a friend in the audience. This is for you. Happy Father’s Day” and he plays My Favourite Song ~ Harvest Moon. I cry and sing. It can’t get any better. Lord let me die now…..

9.45pm I checked the time. I would have to go soon. It’s ok, boy have I had a good time. One more song, then the bus.

Down By The River. I shot my baby….dead……ooohhhh…shot her dead….

But it was new! It was old! It was classic. It was Neil Young. At the chorus it was we singing, sometimes you could barely hear Neil. ………

10.05pm Gotta go. Moved out into the still-light night and hailed a cab.. “??????? Brewer St please.” I’ve got to get my bus home. He asked if I was sure busses go from there? I handed him the leaflet the girl had given me. He pulled over to put on his glasses. Oh Ok, it must be a private bus. I gave him a €3 tip he wished me a happy life.

10.22pm I remembered the street from seeing Avril Lavigne at the old Point with Sekani. I was in the right place. Cathal Brugha St

10.30pm Got on the bus with two others. Re lived the concert as we motored through the total darkness of the countryside.

11.47pm Arrived back in Tullamore. I thanked the driver for the excellent service. I was the only one getting off.

Midnight. Put on the kettle for a cup of coffee. Had a fag. A tear or two rolled down my cheek. Sorry, getting old I guess. I am 60. I am only just starting to peak.
